TUTORIAL 2 - Digital coloring
Tutorial 4

This is one of the ways I do coloring.
There are different ways to do it, so choose the one is more confortable for you.

STEP 1
Transform the lineart into a layer, image in RGB mode.

Photoshop -> Channels, press Control + click on blue channel. Open a new layer, invert seletion, fill with black and block transparency.

Gimp -> Go to filters/color/color to alpha, and choose white on the pop menu. Block transparency

Transparency is blocked so the line can be colored without problems

This method works nice also with pencilled images, so you can color the pencil itself.
STEP 2
Open a new transparent layer. A background layer can be also added (gray this time).

Color the different parts using the pencil. Also can use the lasso tool and fill the selections.
STEP 3
When flats are done, add lights and shadows, using darker and lighter colors.
STEP 4
Smudging and blurring the colors are mixed together, until the colors are blended.

Low pressure airbrush also helps to blend color borders.
STEP 5
To add the shadow from the figure just duplicate the layer with the girl, block transparency, fill with black and change mode to multiply.

Move the layer until the shadow is on the correct place, and blur the edges.

Color and texture added to the background.
STEP 6
When the image looks more finished, it's time to add details.

Add small shadows, smoke, the light on the eye... and blend them using the blur and smudge tool.

This is the longer part, but usually the funnier.
STEP 7
Duplicate the layer with the girl and change the mode (multiply, difference...) to get a different look.
