| TUTORIAL 3 - Digital manipulation: Transforming a model into a comic character | |

| STEP 1 | |
  | Scan the photograph. I also scanned a vellum paper where i drew the costume. This makes easy future selections. |
| STEP 2 | |
  | Using cloning tool, remove the leters and undesired zones of the photo. Cloning remove also the underwear unnecesary, but just where the flesh will show on the final image. The rest will be removed into the next step. |
| STEP 3 | |
  | Once all the cloning is done, save the image. Open a copy and turn it into grayscale. Working in grayscale makes easier to adjust lights and shadows. |
| STEP 4 | |
  | Using
the brush and the stamp tool, paint the figure, following the light and
shadow zones, until all the underwear is out, and the figure looks
"nude". Save again. |
| STEP 5 | |
  | The rest of the cape should be added, so cut and paste some parts of the existing one and deform it to the desired form. Paint, clone and smudge to get a real cape. |
| STEP 6 | |
  | To dress the model select the different parts of the suit (is easier if you´ve drawn and scanned them before). Adjust the levels of the suit, in order to get it as dark as the original cape, so it look similar. Using an adjustement layer is a good idea, so you can preview the changes. Select all the suit, and add a mask to the layer, to hide the background and the model. |
| STEP 7 | |
  | Open the color image, and copy the gray layer twice and save again. |
| STEP 8 | |
 | Open a new layer, color mode, fill it with red, using the gray layer as a mask. |
| STEP 9 | |
  | Usually it looks too light, so put the other gray layer over the red one, and change the mode into multiply or overlay, and adjust the opacity until you find it looks good. |
| STEP 10 | |
  | Add small details, cloning small zones, painting and smudging. Use a photo to add the rings or paint them. |
| STEP 11 | |
  | Time to add the hair, so use a photo and adjust the size. Usually is necesary to duplicate the hair and clone it. Use the smudge tool in order to get new hairs, specially on the hair border, to get a softer image. |
| STEP 12 | |
  | Paint light and dark lines in the border of the suit, in order to get it "real". Adjust the levels on the different layers to integrate them. Once you´re satisfied, flat and save it |
